Autumn photography

We are well into Autumn here in England and winter is approaching fast. So what can we photograph? The rain keeps on coming and the skies have been dark and cloudy. You do get odd days in Autumn and winter when the sun does provide good light though, like in this picture. The colours are different, more muted.

The weather in winter changes from one year to another. Last year we had lots of snow, but the year before it was bitterly cold and these geese were walking on ice. You get different opportunities for different pictures.

If the weather is really bad, you can set your camera on macro mode and photograph your lunch! Try all kinds of subjects indoors, not just food. See how different items reflect the light in different positions.

I remember taking this picture. The weather was cold and damp and I wanted to just go home! The colours are very different to summer though and I did go back in summer to get some beautiful pictures.

The colours in this picture are varied too, but I struggled with the poor light and had to edit to bring out those colours.

With Halloween coming up, I’m now thinking of taking photos of spooky old houses and converting the pictures to grey scale or sepia for a spooky effect.

How about taking a walk around your local graveyard and taking some spooky Halloween pictures? In PhotoScape you can superimpose another image on top of your graveyard image and adjust the transparency of the image. Great for adding a ghost or two to your image!

  1. Hi Mike, My favourite this week is the church picture. Perhaps I’m in the Halloween mood but this photo is very effective in black and white.

Your mood pictures are so strong in evoking emotions. A producer should commission you to do movie posters!

  2. Hi Carolyn,

I know a great church grave yard that is really spooky. I might photograph that if we get some better light one of the days. I read somewhere that people are complaining it’s overgrown, but they say it’s supposed to be to help wildlife. That’s my excuse with my garden too! I’ll have to look around for some spooky buildings for a Halloween post. We took photos in one cemetery a while back and they looked really scary, the graves are sinking into the ground. I might go back and take some better definition pictures with my Nikon. That was a weird place, the moon was in the sky in late afternoon, that gave me a good shot too.

I think I should get commissioned to do something, movie shots, postcards, stamps or an art exhibition. I’ll have a go at anything almost!
