Blogging and social media #SMM

I am admin of several social media channels and of course, I’m a blogger. Many companies now have a company blog and politicians and political advisers have blogs too. The combination of a blog with social media channels allows you to communicate with the public in an interactive way. I can engage with the public and influence my readers. Social Media management (SMM) is serious business. A pedestrian was recently awarded a pay out by a court as compensation for being hit by a bicycle. The lady was looking at her phone while she walked. That is a modern phenomenon, such is the power of social media channels. Blogging and social media together is very influential.

I’ve inserted an image after my first paragraph and images carry a message too. Pictures carry a more subtle message and this particular picture tells you where I live. In the world of blogging and social media you can be a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond. Wednesbury is my small pond and I have some influence in the town. I have been asked to publicise things such as events using my blog and social media. I’m also admin of the History of Wednesbury with 9,000 Facebook likes.

Influence

Pictures that I post with accompanying text often reach 3,000 people but the influence goes beyond that if it is a good post. A interesting post will catch people’s attention but only for a moment in time. I do a post that says good morning and it will reach 500 to 1,000 people. If it inspires a conversation then it can reach 5,000 people. Circulation depends on likes, comments and shares. Users are more likely to click like and comment if the post sparked a conversation in their house!

Conversations

My post on Tuesday morning reminded users that it was Shrove Tuesday, otherwise Pancake Day. I made the post a little amusing by referring to it in dialect as Ponkerk day! I’m sure in many homes that sparked a conversation as users passed on that reminder to their families and they probably did it in dialect. How many people did my post reach altogether? It could have been as high as 10,000 or more as the reminder was passed on from person to person.

Beliefs

We are bombarded with information all the time and that information helps us form beliefs. I did a post about a road closure this week and that post would be completely believable so it would be heeded. Other posts might simply be plausible and contribute to a belief. Belief determines a lot of behaviour and can influence how we vote and what we spend our money on.

Blogging and social media

To become a successful blogger, it helps to be reasonably literate. You need to be quite good at the English language and also computer literate. I started writing this about 15 minutes ago and found a suitable picture in my archive. The flow of the post is quite natural and it should be easy to read. I’m not going to use long words to impress you! In fact, a plug-in on my website will actually analyse what I’ve written both for ease of reading and also for SEO (search engine optimisation) purposes.  A link to this post will automatically be shared on LinkedIn and on Twitter and a copy of the post will go on Tumblr. Other aspects are also automated. I use an app to do the writing on my laptop and after I’ve written the conclusion of this post I’ll do links to Twitter and Facebook and then upload my draft. The next step is editing and then click publish! Finally, I put a link on Facebook manually.
