Content is king #ramble

It’s Sunday morning and so once again I allow you into the dustier part of the labyrinth of neurons that is my mind and share my thoughts with you. We had the first sprinkling of snow this week and so obviously I have the weather on my mind. I also have photography on my mind and I have to give that some serious thought as I plan to invest even more money in it as I develop my art project. ‘Content is king’ is the mantra of social media specialists and that is on my mind too.

Content is king

Content is the words, pictures and sometimes video that makes blogs and social media work. Everyone thinks they understand it but as I write this I have to think about how the Google algorithm will respond to what I write and will this post show up in Google search. If someone searches for ‘content is king’ this post won’t come up at the top of the page but it might be on page two and they can choose this post if it seems appropriate. Without proper keywords and attention to SEO, my post won’t come up in search at all.

Social media

Social media channels also have an algorithm which decides how the posts are syndicated. When I post on a Facebook page, about 1% of the followers get to see the post in the first hour and then it rises exponentially if people actually like the post and show they like it by clicking like or writing a comment or better still sharing the post. Social media is driven by positive interaction. On the History of Wednesbury page, I get critics who are ignorant of how that works. The page is one of the fastest growing local history pages and it grows fast because I pay attention to what people like and give them community news and positive news. Negativity damages that social media channel.

Brunswick Park

I also run the Facebook page for Brunswick Park which was growing but I was forced to resign (as PRO) because of criticism of the way I ran the page. We have an AGM of the group this week and it isn’t something I am looking forward to. I have seen the group being taken over this year and I suspect that process will be completed at this AGM. I will have no involvement in underhand dealings. The Facebook page wasn’t a huge success this year but I had problems getting the content I needed. I needed photographs and video and I was obstructed from the beginning. I walked away from conflict at the last meeting because of the hostility and I’ll walk away again. Social media management is now a university course and people who don’t understand the algorithms shouldn’t criticise.

The quality of content is also of vital importance and that is why in 2018 I shall reorganise my blog and invest in better photography equipment. My content creation is now going in the direction of creating art. This will be more of a challenge and although I would have liked to continue the things I have been doing, I might have to move on. I think priorities will have to change. A new year is going to mean new opportunities and new plans.

Those are my thoughts on this cold and frosty Sunday morning. Yes, they are a bit of a jumble but I know the direction I am going in! I volunteer my time and the only reward I expect is for people to say thank you.

That’s all for this week. The post on Tuesday will be about photography and art. If you would like to follow my blog and receive an email each time I post just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar. You can also follow me on Twitter for updates and there are links on my Facebook page.
