Cooking up some savings #thrifty
You don’t have to do much cooking when we have summer weather, but here in the heart of England, the rain has returned. The forecast for the weekend is better and so the salad days may return. In Aldi this week the iceberg lettuce, spring onions, celery and radishes are just 29p each so a healthy salad might be on the menu this weekend.
I did a little cooking this week and got some ingredients from Asda. Aldi does delicious gluten-free sausages but hasn’t had any for some time and so I got some from Asda.
Bangers and mash
This was my bangers and mash in onion gravy. I did plenty of potatoes and white cabbage so I could do bubble and squeak the next day! We tend to forget delicious traditional dishes like this and opt instead for exotic takeaways. Taking the trouble to cook not only saves money but can earn you a little praise from your family.
French fry salad
My ham salad with French fries only took ten minutes to prepare. The fries are made from potato and rice and are Champion French fries from Aldi, just 75p a kilo. The ham was from Aldi too, as was the tomatoes and iceberg lettuce.
You can also do those gluten-free sausages with baked potatoes and veggies. I cooked crispy chicken wings in sage last night, those were from Asda too and a little expensive at 2.38 compared to the chicken drumsticks and thighs from Aldi which are 2.39 but have twice as much meat on them. I had turkey drumsticks from Asda for £2 each too which seem a little expensive but are better quality than some other stores.
Fruit and Veg
Compare fruit and veg now as some are in season and some aren’t. I had a punnet of peaches for 60p but the runner beans seemed expensive even though they are in season. Many processed foods like ice cream are cheaper in Aldi and so strawberries and ice cream for Sunday tea might be worth considering.
That’s it for this week, enjoy the weekend, the weather forecast is better and so I’ll be outdoors. If you would like to follow this blog, just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter for updates. You can find more ideas on my Facebook page.
