Creating an art print #ramble #photography

It’s Sunday morning and so, as usual, I’ll share my thoughts with you. We put the clocks on last night so I lost an hour’s sleep. It was colder when I woke up and I definitely didn’t want to get up! I did a bit of online shopping this week. All through the winter, I was looking for a new winter jumper and now spring is here I find one! I also bought some of those jogging pants everyone seems to be wearing. They were in the sale so it won’t be so bad if I don’t end up wearing them. The pockets are too small but apart from that, they seem good. They will be warm in winter and I can wear them around the house. I’m not sure if I want to be seen in public in them! Anyway, this week I’ve been thinking about art prints.

The Magnum photographic agency is selling art prints for £100 each.  I’ve been doing a few prints, too. When I’ve added a mount, the finished print is 10 x 8 inches, so bigger than the Magnum square prints. If you want one, just email me. I’ll use the money for charitable purposes. I’ll give the first £100 to the food bank, they’re getting a bit desperate now. I did have trouble with my printer, for some reason, it started just printing the top and bottom of the photo with a blank space in the middle. I found if I print directly from my editing app rather than pressing control-p, it solved the problem. I liked the first frame I bought too but I have some white frames that are quite nice. If I sell a few prints I might source some better frames. Email me to order your prints and payment will be by Paypal.

I also did a print of this picture of two ladies at the Metro stop. This was also taken with my full-frame Nikon D750. I did print a third picture but realised later that the resolution wasn’t good enough. It was a picture that I took at Laybourne Park when we had the Caravan Gallery there in 2019. That shot was taken with the Nikon D3200 but it was a good shot because it was sunny. The bright colours of the fairground rides looked great. I might find the original of that image and do another print at a higher resolution.

Shooting for prints

The Nikon D750 is much better when shooting in low light and is the better camera for shooting images for creating prints. I’ll be out taking photos this afternoon but I doubt if the subject matter will warrant me doing a print. You never really know when you might get a really great photo and it is the really great photos that I’ll print and maybe put for sale. Not that I expect many orders!

Creating an image

A photographer can create images with a camera but we can also create an image by considering how we dress and our appearance. What does a photographer look like? I have developed a ‘look’ that people recognise. I have transitions lenses in my glasses that go dark in bright sunlight and I wear a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes too. I suppose the camera adds to that ‘look’. Is the ‘look’ important? It helps to look like you are professional. I listened to an interview with a member of Status Quo yesterday and he talked about how they developed a hard rock look for the band. The ‘look’ is part of an image you present to the world and has to be created.
