Do people need more culture or better role models?

driving in the rain 2

I’ve used my ‘driving in the rain’ picture to begin today’s blog. We have had a bit of sky juice this year. It makes you wonder if we should build an ark or whether we’ve done something to deserve it.

The good news is that with all this cloud cover is helping to keep the heat in, we might not have really low temperatures this winter. With all the energy bills going up yet again, we all need a break.

It seems that other bills are going up too, telephone bills, water and even if council tax is frozen for the time being, people are struggling. It’s bad enough if you are well and have a job, but many people are sick and have no job. The situation is made worse by poor housing, benefit cuts and rising prices. Many people who are working are now beginning to struggle with rising prices, especially petrol prices as more and more people have to commute to work.

Many people are resorting to pay day loans and other loans to try to maintain their standard of living. There is a lot of pressure on many people and it comes from their natural instinct to provide for their families. They will ignore mounting debts and resort to loans with extortionate interest rates. There is always companies that will prey on the vulnerable. The vulnerable are the poor, sick and now more and more disabled  people are becoming more and more vulnerable.

There are a lot pressures on people these days to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ and to be socially acceptable. Even having the ubiquitous smart phone is seen as essential these days, even on the grottiest of housing estates. We have to try to resist these pressures and make other things; less expensive things, desirable and fashionable. It seems that access to the internet makes the pressures even worse as people are bombarded with even more advertising. The advertising is now targeted and people only have to show a passing interest in a product for the advertising to be shown on every almost every website they visit.

Can we do anything to protect people against the exploitation that multinationals expose people too? They pay minimum wages and then tempt people with products and finance that they can’t afford. Not only that, their children are tempted with products that their parents can’t afford, putting parents under psychological pressure as providers for their children.

Perhaps we need a different culture? Perhaps we need different television programmes to encourage different behaviour? Do we need less Coronation Street and Eastenders and more culture? Most people would be horrified if their favourite soaps were taken off, they are so addicted to them. Perhaps we need new soaps that people will enjoy with more positive role models?

It makes you think doesn’t it? Does television reflect society or does society reflect television? I think they could both feed off each other…

Please comment if you have a viewpoint.

    • There are lots of sites, just look at who is commenting on this one. I think many will disappear because quality is poor, but that’s OK because I expect to be writing for a long time yet!
