Gaslighting the nation #politics #psychology

Wikipedia: Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which a person seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, gaslighting involves attempts to destabilize the victim and delegitimize the victim’s belief.

350 million

Boris Johnson’s Brexit bus banner promised us 350 millions extra for the NHS if we left the European Union. That claim was later exposed as a lie. We were only paying about 250 millions a week to the EU. Then Theresa May decided that she would give 384 Million to the NHS making the claim something of a truth! Is that the truth? She went on to include a proviso that the extra money would be forthcoming by 2024. She will soon be stepping down as Prime Minister, though. Will Boris honour that pledge?

Did the government really need austerity or were the claims another case of lying and gaslighting the nation? They can afford over £50 billion for HS2 which Boris Johnson described as ‘cheap’. The government also spirited 375 billion out of thin air in the form of Quantitative Easing following the 2008 ‘credit crunch’. This they would have us believe was used to bail out the banks. Meanwhile the banks have been handing out billions in PPI refunds. Was all that money just for PPI? Was austerity just to bail out the wrong doings of the banking industry?

It’s not just the Tories who have trouble telling the truth. Labour can’t decide whether they want to stay in the EU or support Brexit. They can’t decide if they are racist or not either. I think Jeremy Corbyn likes to be seen supporting the underdog but him and his team seem quite used to bullying people to get their way. Being nice and polite doesn’t cut it when you’re fighting a revolution and it is a cultural revolution that I think Corbyn has always wanted. He needs to learn a little diplomacy now he actually has some political influence and isn’t the underdog himself.

Mental health

Mental health problems have soared in recent years and is it any wonder when we can’t trust any of our politicians and can’t believe what we read in the newspapers? They are gaslighting the whole nation . Boris is paid a fortune to write his variations on truth for a major newspaper and even George Osborne, that champion of austerity, has landed an editors job. What was all that austerity for George? To pay for the banks misselling of PPI or was it to pay for HS2? It certainly wasn’t for a better NHS and we need better now mental health problems have doubled under Tory control. Crime is just one factor that has us living in fear.

The government has used persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying. They are gaslighting the nation and have destabilised society. People are afraid to walk the streets because of crime and children are afraid for the future as politicians send out mixed messages about climate change. Britain is really having a nervous breakdown.
