Giving everyone an equal chance #ramble

It is Sunday morning and so once again I’ll allow you into the neural labyrinth and share my thoughts with you. What’s on my mind this week? Well, as usual photography and as I’m involved so much with social media I’m also trying to promote the Blast Photo festival photography competition. I don’t always agree with the way photography competitions are run because they can favour certain people unfairly. This one, however, will be fair as the judges won’t know the entrants and people who are new to photography will still be in with an equal chance of being a finalist.

Equal chance

So we are giving everyone an equal chance of winning a prize. If you have a good eye for framing a scene and can hold the camera still you can at least be a finalist even if you don’t win. Life can be unfair and we need to give people an equal chance when we can.

I still have a stinking cold and cough but I hope to get out in the sunshine today and do a little photography. I like landscape photography but I’m now looking for different subjects. I have taken to photographing signs, pubs, corner shops and anything unusual. I was reading the manual for my camera in bed last night. It does a few things I haven’t tried before like bracketing and HDR. I would like to try HDR on a building, maybe a church. I photographed All Saints church last week and those images were quite sharp but I have seen churches shot in HDR and it does bring out the texture of the stone.

A picture can be a narrative, it can tell a story. Images can conceal hidden messages too. I have been taking photos of the town centre in a bid to promote the small traders in Wednesbury. The messages might be subliminal but they are effective.

I do have a bit of a thing about toilets. I think the lack of toilets in the park really is a big problem. I went to Forge Mill farm last week and being a distance away from home I find it reassuring that they do have toilets. We really need a new pavilion in our park complete with toilets. I hope we get heritage lottery funding for that. If we could get the car park extended that would help too and allow us to put on events.

I’m trying to get people involved in the arts festival because photography is something everyone can do. It is a skill to get a really sharp picture with the right white balance and colour balance but anyone can actually take a reasonable picture these days. Modern cameras do all the setting for you. I think involvement can give young people an equal chance of becoming successful in the arts. Civil society has a place in providing that first step into the arts whether it be photography, music or some other creative endeavour.

That’s all for today, I have to empty my washing machine in 10 minutes! Sunday is always a busy day! If you would like to subscribe to my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter for links to the latest posts. Those links are also on my Facebook Page.
