Going over to the dark side #life

We’re all going over to the dark side now as the winter solstice approaches. In ancient times they actually believed in the evil spirits of winter and looked for evergreens like mistletoe, holly and ivy to protect them from the dark side. The evergreens were thought to have magical properties that kept them green all through winter.

The dark side

The Anglo Saxons really believed in the evil spirits of winter and the ancient Britons with their Druid culture made sacrifices around the time of the winter solstice. I suspect the sacrificial lamb or goat was their last meal before food became scarce through the long winter. We still think of people being good and evil and the Christian religion that was introduced to the Anglo Saxons over a 1,000 years ago still lingers as part of our culture.

I find it quite strange that people with power over our lives cling to these early beliefs more than most people. Perhaps, they need to worship and atone for their sins more than us mere mortals. Even Hitler, who most definitely went over to the dark side, claimed God was on his side. Donald Trump refers to God a lot and although Russia is supposed to be atheist, I wouldn’t be surprised if Putin had some strange primitive beliefs as well.

Perhaps we need all the Christmas lights to frighten away our imaginary evil spirits. Imagery has a powerful effect on the human mind and so too does music. Perhaps the calming effects of carol singing calmed our ancestors as the days got shorter and darker. These days as the days become more depressing we seem to crave that Christmas number one which has to be cheerful and uplifting. Bring on the Christmas songs to banish the blues and the dark side!

That’s it for today. I’ll be rambling again tomorrow morning. In the meantime, if you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar.
