Images from the past #ramble

It’s Sunday morning and so I’ll share my thoughts with you once again. What’s on my mind this week? I’m running a competition on the History of Wednesbury Facebook page and it’s going rather well. I’ve asked for contributions as entries and so far we have had about 25 pictures and one poem. These images from the past are quite nostalgic and take you back to a different era.

Art cards

I’ve been thinking about another art card too and tried combining images so I can promote or represent more than one town on a single card. I’m not sure if I actually want people on my art cards though. The two pubs represent Tipton and Darlaston but the smaller pictures aren’t so representative. I need to think about it more. A card that represents four towns might be better?

Images from the past

I’m still getting those old photos submitted for the competition. More images from the past are being posted in the group so maybe the competition has inspired people to sort out their photos. I have to be careful to keep tabs on which ones I have posted on the Facebook page.

Recording history

Of course, I take lots of photos and so record today’s images so they will be tomorrow’s history. I often overlook the obvious because everything is changing. Events are good to photograph but so are streets of terraced houses and the grander houses of the Victorian era. Public buildings are a good subject too. Of course, people change and I try to photograph people more too. It’s not easy because some people see it as an invasion of privacy and I’ve even been harassed while I was taking photos by a irate market trader. I think his goods are probably dodgy and so he doesn’t want his stall photographed, which is fine with me, but he can’t impose a blanket ban on me photographing the town centre.  He’ll be getting a visit from trading standards if I have any more trouble from him.

Being able to use imagery does give you a certain amount of influence especially on social media. Some people don’t like that, particularly if I promote ideas that are politically opposed to their narrow views.

Anyway, I have to edit and label more images from the past and then it’s a light lunch before I go exploring with my camera.
