Keeping up appearances #life

Some cities are just a mass of skyscrapers. I suppose in the future that will be how everyone will live. The high-rise experiment in the UK didn’t work too well and in many cases, they have built terraced houses to replace the high-rise blocks. For councils, it is a matter of keeping up appearances, building new homes and thinking about suitability and sustainability later.

Terraced

When people lived in terraced houses with a loo in the yard and not much money they often took pride in their front step, cleaning it every morning and often polishing it as well. They also went to great lengths to get the net curtains up the front window as white as possible. Appearances were important. You would get gossiped about if you didn’t keep up appearances.

Block Paving

I suppose the equivalent to the shiny front step these days is block paving, it has become a status symbol. There are other things like hanging baskets and people spend a fortune on their gardens and other things as a way of keeping up appearances.

Keeping up appearances

There are more personal things that appear to be minor status symbols that include brand name clothing, hairstyles and now tattoos. Car registrations are important to some people. They buy personalised registrations or if they are poorer try to get a registration that shows their car is newer than their neighbour.

Making it last

I owned my last car for 13 years and it was 7 years old when I bought it. This one was 2 1/2 years old when I bought it but will it last me for 13 years? The way my health is going I don’t know if I’ll last 13 years! I have to just think positively and make the best of everything.

Art

I don’t have room in my life for status symbols but I think I do have room for art so I have been thinking about my photography a lot. I try to contribute and help others and I have been taking photos that I think others will like. Perhaps I should just take photos for me? If I just take photos that I like then when others like them I will have found people with the same tastes as me! I can also be a little like the ladies cleaning their front step, I can take pride in producing something I can be proud of. I think I will have to put much more planning into getting great shots. Not shots that everyone else thinks are great but shots that I think are great!

That’s it for today. How can I go from front steps to art in a single post? I can also write what I want to write and not worry about what others think. I don’t need a showy Rolex, my Sekonda tells the time! If you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar.
