Loneliness… by Fairy Dharawat

It is not all bad. All great people felt lonely at some point in their life and they have fought the feeling and came out stronger. Be it music, art, movies, you name it. Loneliness is a subject which has haunted the human mind since ages. Here is a look in to the word lonely and exploring the concept through a different lens – trees.

I think we can learn a lot from nature and especially trees. Nature provides education with a number of natural elements like trees and how they flourish even when standing alone because of strong foundation they have which is to be deep rooted in the ground. I also think that trees help us in learning not to feel lonely, as if these mesmerizing images are anything to go by; trees teach us to be strong, patient, deep rooted and elegant and not let loneliness get better of you.

“Lonely I am Mr. Lonely, I have nobody to call my oooown…” there is a reason why this song from Akon became multi platinum and a worldwide hit. Apart from Akon’s high octane soulful voice and music, it is the lyrics that gripped the world to become a number one hit in more than one country. His song is about how the singer is lonely. Yes even Akon can feel lonely – it is just that not many think that when they feel lonely they are the only one. Hundreds and thousands of people feel lonely and they feel so lonely that they fall in to depression. Loneliness is described in Wikipedia as “a complex and usually unpleasant response to isolation or lack of companionship.” But there are noted cases of people feeling depression even in the company of people and this makes feeling lonely quite unsuspecting in nature.

Man loves company even if it is only that of a small burning candle. – Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Everyone feels lonely at one point in their lifetime. And it is not that bad. You feel bad as there is no one out there to be with you at that particular moment when you have this urge to share your emotions through words, companionship, or just presence. Chronic loneliness is to be worried about and one has to get help in any form. Watching nature and trees have been identified by scientists to ease nerves and release tension to bring relaxation.

The time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself. – Doug Coupland

It is a sad feeling and an involuntary decision to feel miserable. Shrugging off the feeling seems tough. So what do you do when the loneliness bug bites you? I think the answer lies in you. There are multiple reasons for your diagnosis. The right person is you and it starts with you. People may be externally responsible for you feeling lonely, it is a possibility. But in the end it is your decision to remain in that state of mind. Staying rooted to your beliefs and not let momentary discomfort affect you and push you easily from your core foundation; trees teach you.

The worst loneliness is not to be comfortable with yourself. -Mark Twain

Lonely feeling can be turned around and for that you need to be by yourself and enjoy your own company. Loneliness is feeling of depravity to some extent and is the cause of unhappiness because you do not feel as good about yourself as you should. Loving thyself is the key to curb loneliness. It is only then that you accept yourself as an independent individual capable of improving the situation you are in.

You cannot be lonely if you like the person you’re alone with. -Wayne W. Dyer

In the end it comes around to the company you enjoy. So be your best buddy and enjoy your company and treat yourself with the best in life. Also share it with those who need it. A walk in the garden can do wonders. Visit an orphanage, old age home and offer assistance in kind and you may feel not lonely any more. Lonely feeling is only a temporary emotion; it need not be made permanent.
