Looking for good composition #photography

In the old days of the film camera, we needed all the light we could get and to a certain extent that is still true. To get the maximum amount of light photographers often shot with the sun behind them but that can produce an image devoid of shadows. Some shadow can make for a better composition.

You can see the effect of shadow in this shot in very bright sunlight. I had to be careful not to over-expose this shot because I needed the whole clock tower in and that meant a lot of sky which could have over-exposed the whole frame. I walked around a little and tried to get just the right angle. I just keep looking at the composition of the shot I’m about to take until it looks right.

The shadow in this shot emphasises the shape of the building and gives it form. Obviously, on a very sunny day, a shadow can put a lot of black into the picture and make it very dull. I tried to get a good angle to this building as well to get just the right composition.

That’s all for this week. To get a better composition we need to experiment. If you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter for updates. You can also find links to the latest posts on my Facebook page.
