Make it pretty! #WednesdayWisdom

Yesterday, I had to write a short piece about the town I live in. What’s it like? It’s not pretty and that is the problem, it gets uglier all the time. We need to make it pretty! We need grass verges not tarmac ones. I know that means mowing them through summer but at least that will keep a few people in jobs. The speed humps and potholes on estates make them look ugly too.

Make it pretty

As we drive into the town we have garish signs and industrial units. You might even seen a ‘Welcome to Wednesbury’ which act as a red rag to a bull as far as local people are concerned. I think prettier streets would encourage children to walk to school and negate the school run chaos on the roads as well as easing parking congestion outside the schools.

Wildflowers

You can make it pretty with wildflowers and that was what the council did last year on one estate and local people noticed and the initiative got their vote of confidence. It was also good for wildlife and bees.

Town centres

In Wednesbury, our town centre needs to be improved too and private landlords encouraged to keep buildings in good repair. That would take leadership and it is leadership that is sadly lacking these days with the council’s civic centre miles away in Oldbury. We need localization to bring power back to the people. The people need a voice to tell those in positions of authority what is needed to make the town better.

What do you think of today’s topic? Do you think our environment is ugly? Do we need a ‘make it pretty’ campaign?
