Making a little extra money #photography

I’ve been considering ways of making extra money from my photography. I could run a workshop and teach others the craft but there are various other ways of making money such as selling pictures. You can sell pictures directly or sell to photo libraries. I get asked for permission to use my pictures occasionally and I think in future I might ask for a contribution towards my expenses.

Extra Money

Images like the one above are popular and can be kept as stock images just in case someone wants an image to represent something in particular. Putting together a collection of iconic images from the locality you live in can be a good idea. Prices charged for using an image can vary a lot. £5 is about the minimum and libraries charge more for large images. Images above 24 MB can cost £100 or more each but that is reasonable because you need a particularly expensive camera for those images and you usually need to take the picture requested by the customer. My camera takes images at 6000 px by 4000 px so that is 24 megapixels but they are often cropped to get the image that I want. For the internet, I resize them to 1500 px across and that also makes them easier to email.

Selling art cards could also be another profitable venture. I would have to create some really attractive images and have them printed at postcard size. Printed as matt cards is better than glossy to define them as art cards. Making a little extra money selling them at some kind of event like an arts festival might be an option.

You need to build something of a reputation as a photographer before you can even consider making extra money from it. Whether it is wedding photography or art photography you have to acquire the skills and make an investment in the equipment and the marketing.

I hope I have given you a few ideas, how you can make extra money from your photography. As always if you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter for updates. You can also find links on my Facebook page.
