The post-truth era #observation

The Oxford English dictionary has a new adjective:

  • Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief:‘in this era of post-truth politics, it’s easy to cherry-pick data and come to whatever conclusion you desire’‘some commentators have observed that we are living in a post-truth age’

Have the people who have power over us, the politicians and the media, decided that it is acceptable to lie to us and deceive us? Was any of the Brexit debate based on truth? When we listen to Prime Minister’s question time, is it all rhetoric and point scoring and the manipulation of language just to give an impression with a cynical intention to deceive? What drives these people? Is it just an addiction to power or is it ideology or is it something much simpler such as money. They talk of aspirations and so perhaps we should consider status. Is it all about status? Do they think they are better than us and need to assert that belief?

Many of the Brexit arguments seem to be based on nationalism, belief that we are somehow a superior race that shouldn’t be tainted by immigration. Control over our own affairs is really the pursuit of power by some minor politicians with grandiose ambitions. Did the Brexiteers lie to get the result of the referendum to go their way? How about the Remainers? Despite the value of the pound falling to an all time low the economy isn’t doing too badly. Holiday money for some people will be more expensive next year, but is that a bad thing? The price of imported goods will go up too but we import too much anyway and mostly we charge it credit cards.

Never-ending debt

That seems to be the big lie that the country and the people can go on borrowing from the rich and the pension funds forever without paying a price. The price is a kind of enslavement. An insecurity that will  make people constantly aspire to acquire higher status and to earn more. That is, of course, what many politicians want, but is it healthy for society? Do we want a highly competitive, dog eat dog society, where it is acceptable to lie  and cheat to get what you want? Are we in a post-truth era?
