Say it with flowers? #ValentinesDay

What are the origins of Valentine’s Day?

The day gets its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was. The popular belief about St Valentine is that he was a priest from Rome in the third century AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned marriage because he thought married men were bad soldiers. Valentine felt this was unfair, so he broke the rules and arranged marriages in secret. When Claudius found out, Valentine was thrown in jail and sentenced to death. There, he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February he sent her a love letter signed “from your Valentine”. The rest is history and men have been trying to say it with flowers ever since.

Say it with flowers

Expressing our emotions isn’t always easy especially for men. Perhaps that is why many men prefer to say it with flowers or even chocolates. They say actions speak louder than words and showing you care for someone is more honest than just expressing it in words. Words are important, however, and can easy upset or offend. If I was going to give advice to the fairer sex I would advise them to avoid men who swear a lot and express themselves with profanities. If they use words that you wouldn’t like them using in front of your nan, then avoid them like the plague. Men who constantly use offensive words and profanity have little respect for others and beneath their amusing exterior probably lies a misogynist that will ultimately treat you badly.

A precious gift

Time is a precious gift. Someone who takes the time to listen to you and tries to understand you is more likely to be reliable in the long-term. Love is about a long-term relationship after all.

You don’t judge a book by it’s cover

Yes, appearances can be deceptive and both sexes need to beware of only seeing what they want to see. Will you still feel the same when the makeup comes off or when sobered up? Today is a day when people feel left out if they don’t have a partner and so might rush in where angels fear to tread.
