Social media: creating the content

It’s Sunday morning and here in the Black Country, the sky is blue and the sun is shining. As usual on a Sunday I’m considering where I can go to get a little exercise and take some photos. I really want to photograph people but I find it quite difficult to just go up to people and ask if I can take their photo. I suppose I could be sneaky about it and use a long lens! Anyway, I have social media on my mind and I need to create content.

social media proof

Low light

Yes, I did a little low-light photography at the Mecca Bingo Club in Wednesbury on Friday night. I actually went out in the evening. It was a Legends of Darts evening and besides watching the darts we were treated to comedy and a darts competition. I was asked to promote the evening a little on social media and my blog. I wrote a post about it a few days ago and promoted it on Facebook and Twitter.

Social Media

Social media including blogging isn’t just about publicising things it is about ‘social proof’. A lot of people would stop and consider going to the event just because I said I was going! The same applies to Brunswick Park and next Saturday’s carnival. I’ve created a Brunswick Park logo which is a vectored graphic and so it can be overlaid onto the photographs. How cool is that?

My social media channels are, this blog, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. On Facebook, I have a page for this blog but I also manage five other pages and I’m an admin in four groups as well. I’m getting quite good at it and so I can promote the carnival and I will be involved in next year’s arts festival. Part of the Blast photography festival will be a body of work created called the Sandwell Pride of Place Project and that has a Facebook group. I’m one of the admins of that group. The group is attracting members who are interested in art and in becoming involved in the festival.

Social media is all about publishing content and I create content by writing but also by using photography and graphic design. I can combine these four disciplines. I also do lots of historical research and post snippets of history and photographs on the History of Wednesbury page where I am also an admin.

My health has deteriorated in the past year and I had to go to the Mecca club in advance to check if there were disabled parking places close to the entrance. I think taking photographs of the carnival will present lots of difficulties as well. I have to be honest with myself and others and admit I now have limitations while at the same time trying to improve my health. A change of medication means I can walk farther now than a couple of weeks ago but I’m still very restricted. At least social media can be managed sitting comfortably and using a laptop.

That’s all for today. I’ll be out this afternoon with my camera creating content for future use. Let me take your photo is you see me! If you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or check out my other social media channels and follow me on Twitter. You can also find photos and links to new posts on my Facebook page.
