Survival; what else is there #life

I usually write about finance and investments on Fridays but what is the use of having money if you’re dead? Primarily life is about survival and money is way down the list of priorities. It is important because it can help us survive and survive comfortably but it is not our primary goal.

I took this photo yesterday evening. I think my photography helps me keep a sense of proportion. Looking down over the town considering what everyone will be doing between 7 and 8 o’clock in the evening. Is everyone doing something mundane like watching a soap, eating their evening meal or reading the local newspaper? They are concerned with the necessities of life. To some extent too, they are just passing the time. They watch fairly meaningless soaps that have the same storylines for decade after decade, rarely changing. Do they ever pick up a book and actually learn something?

The luxury of being creative

I enjoy being creative and one of my pictures has been accepted for an art competition and will be exhibited in the art gallery next month. It is a bit of a luxury enjoying being creative and I don’t think I could do it if I wasn’t retired. The everyday business of making a living and survival in general gets in the way when you’re younger. I think I value my time more now and although I watch TV after 9 o’clock to help me relax before I sleep I don’t watch soaps which are really poor quality television and only good for meaninglessly passing the time.

Education is important to me, especially self-education. I read a lot and I taught myself how to use a DSLR camera. We live in an anxious world and I’m more anxious than most people. Education helps you to cope with a complex world. Again, it helps you in the survival process. Survival isn’t just about living, it is about living a worthwhile life. Many things help us feel good about ourselves such as doing good deeds and being appreciated. Recognition for creating things of value also enhance our sense of self-worth.

I still have my investments and I still monitor the stock market. The latest news is the FTSE 100 could reach a record high again but the underlying economy looks to becoming increasingly risky. Geopolitical risks are rising, the oil price is rising and while there are still opportunities they are difficult to identify. I shall wait for one of my riskier companies to come good. Until then I’ll just sit tight.

That’s it for this week. On Sunday, I’ll share my thoughts again. What will be n my mind this week? If you would like to follow my blog just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter for links. You can also find links and more on my Facebook page.
