Surviving Christmas

The supermarkets where I live are very busy and people are stocking up on food and booze. I have had enquiries about Christmas openings, but most supermarkets don’t seem to have them on their websites yet. Usually they are closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day; except for Asda who usually open on Boxing Day. I’ll do an update if I find out the opening times.

We also have outbreaks of the Norovirus where I live. I used germ killing hand gel when I was at the hospital a couple of times, on the way in and on the way out. There are other illnesses you can get at this time of year and Poundland has lots of cheap medicines. You need at least to have pain killers like paracetamol, a stock of tissues,  cold relief medicines and indigestion medicine to deal with those Christmas problems.  You should also be careful of food poisoning over Christmas. That turkey can be lethal if not properly thawed. It needs to be cooked well too. About an hour for each kilo and then check it to see if it’s cooked. Push a sharp knife into the thickest part and the juices should run clear.

A lot of people will be dreading the bills coming in in January. I just had a credit card bill to pay in January, that isn’t a problem; I was expecting it. One option if you’re desperate, is to do a balance transfer onto another credit card. Fees are around 3% and the interest free period can be up to 24 months. Check out Barclaycard, their fee is reduced to 2.1% if your balance is over £2,000. If you are responsible and have a good credit rating, you could try to get a loan from Zopa at a much lower interest rate than that credit card.  Zopa is also good if you have money to invest. Whatever you do, avoid payday loans like the plague.

Most supermarkets will be shutting early on Christmas Eve and so you might pick up some bargains like bread, fruit and vegetables if you pop in after 5 o’clock. I just found out my local Asda shuts at 6 o’clock on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

If you drink a little too much alcohol over Christmas, you’ll get dehydrated, so drink water as soon as you wake up (or even before then). You can try replacing the potassium you lose by eating a banana too. A couple of paracetamol will help the headache, but a hair of the dog isn’t advisable.

If you can’t afford to buy everything you would like to buy, remember that Christmas is about people, not things.

Finally, if you haven’t read my Christmas story, check that out; it’s FREE! Come back and comment and tell me if you liked it…
