Socialising and days out on a budget #thrifty

We all like to go out and socialise and meet our friends and new people too, but it can be expensive. We can cut the cost by trying to get value for money and resist the temptation to buy food when we smell the onions or see other people enjoying hot dogs at a popular event. Taking out the sandwiches that you prepared earlier doesn’t have much appeal in comparison to the delicious food offered by the vendors. We do have to live within a budget, though, so we can still do some socialising and limit the amount of food and drink we buy while we’re out.

Focus points #photography

All digital cameras have focus points, some cameras like my Fujifilm, just have one. My Nikon D3200 has 11 focus points that come up as red dots. It is important to get those focus points on your subject. I like to use one focus point for a single subject such as photographing one person and all 11 focus points for a group or a landscape.

Carnival time #Wednesbury

It was carnival time again in Wednesbury yesterday and I was there to take a few photos again. I try to promote events around Wednesbury and take photographs at charity events. We need to improve our communities and heal rifts, not provoke hostility and division.

Scene modes at events #photography

CARNIVAL 2015 (390)

At events, you often have to capture the action quickly. You don’t have time to fiddle around with camera settings. Then the camera ‘scene’ modes won’t give you a great photo, but they are usually good enough. I used the sport setting for this shot. It gave me a wide aperture and fast shutter speed. (more…)

Black Country Festival

The Black Country Festival goes on today, with more events all through the weekend. It was the funeral of the victims of the tragedy in Tunisia yesterday where three local people lost their lives. Yesterday was a day of sadness and reflection, but life goes on, even though for some it will never be the same again. (more…)

Wednesbury Carnival in pictures

CARNIVAL 2015 (10)

If you’re a regular reader you’ll know on a Sunday morning I just ramble on about whatever is on my mind. This morning it’s photography, because I photographed the Carnival yesterday. I think a few people will want to see pictures, so I’ll ramble less today! (more…)

Carnival – preparing for a photo shoot.

horses at the frying pan (34)

When you’re preparing for a photo shoot, you need information about the location and what you’re going to be photographing. Next weekend I’ll be at Wednesbury carnival on Saturday and then on Sunday I’ll be photographing a drive with horses, carts and traps touring around a few pubs. (more…)

Parking and other things #Sunday ramble

This is my first Sunday ramble on a Zillion Ideas, I usually post them on my WordPress blog. On a Sunday morning, I just ramble on about whatever is on my mind. Today it’s summer carnivals because the sun’s shining and it’s Tipton Carnival today. (more…)

Photography: Planning for an event

Brunswick Park, Wednesbury

I’m planning on photographing the carnival in the park this year again. So I went into the park and took some shots in bright sunlight. You can see the really dark shadows in this shot when I shoot south west. (more…)

Photographing events

I went to photograph a carnival on Saturday.  This isn’t my usual subject and I’m not very familiar with the camera and so I decided to just use the standard settings on the camera. I took this shot as soon as I arrived with the camera set on landscape. That means a narrow aperture and more depth of field. (more…)

England in summer

Last month, I turned art critic and did a review of an exhibition at Walsall art gallery. Yesterday, I was out photographing the carnival in the park. It was a nice afternoon and it’s been a long time since we have seen such a good turnout. I’m sure many people went in the evening when things had cooled down a little.
