Escaping from slavery #finance #health

I usually write my finance and investment post on a Friday but I had a few other things to do so I’m a day late. Escaping from slavery sounds like a title about the deep south or a post about a third world country but many of us in developing countries are enslaved by addiction or debt. We become slaves to tobacco, alcohol or interest payments. Gambling and even shopping can be addictive and can also enslave us. So we need to throw off our shackles and live free. The prize in many cases is peace of mind, debt can drive people to suicide. In the great depression of the 1930’s financiers were throwing themselves off the skyscrapers of New York, such is the power of money in our lives.

Lifestyle choices #thrifty #frugal

Thrifty Thursday: lifestyle

Lifestyle

Lifestyle can decide our health, wealth and most other things in life. If you want to lose weight, it’s no good eating a slimming meal once a week. You have to make low-calorie healthy eating a lifestyle choice that influences every meal and snack. If you want to save money, your lifestyle has to influence every financial purchase and decision. Getting creative for health #life

1 artistic edit

Today’s picture is an artistic edit of one of the photographs that I took on Sunday. I wish I could have done stuff like this when I was younger. Technology has given us the tools to become much more creative. (more…)

The Frugal Diet | Meals and Snacks

Stir fry 2

The stir fry I cooked for dinner has around 250 to 300 calories and so quite good. Counting calories can be confusing because the calorie is a unit of energy. The kilocalorie or kcal is a thousand calories and this has been adopted for diets and expressed as the Calorie with a big C! This is confusing and many foods are now marked with kcal to tell you how many calories they contain. I checked how many calories were in my morning biscuits, 250 kcal; that’s nearly as much as a meal! In fact if I do a salad with a can of sardines, it works out to around 250 kcal and that includes the oven chips! (more…)

Psychology | hormones

Woden Road S - Wednesbury

I was reminded of a joke about British bank holidays some time ago. Why are they called bank holidays? Because the banks are closed. Why are the banks closed? Because it’s a holiday! Two things can be inter-dependant and this appears to be the case with our emotions and our hormones. We become stressed and we produce cortisol, but it also appears cortisol makes us feel stressed. It could be that when we become stressed we produce cortisol; that makes us feel even worse and we are then forced to take action. The action can be ‘fight or flight’, to face up to what is making us feel stressed or to run away. (more…)

The week in brief

Rose

End of March 2012

We had a few things to talk about this week. The weather was unusually mild for the end of March. In England we usually have our heating on until the 1st of May and it’s not always warm enough in May to turn off the heating. My ‘death or glory’ investment in Premier Foods was doing well on Monday and Tuesday briefly touching 18p a share before dropping back to just over 16p. I bought at 4p and so I’m happy. They doubled in January and made more ground this week and I expect they will do well again before the year is out. You have to try to make a quid. (more…)

Keep Young and beautiful

Keep young and beautiful – if you want to be loved…

Slowing the ageing process.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could find a super-food that not only slows the ageing process, but helps us live longer and protects us against nasty diseases? This is exactly what I have been researching using all the resources the internet has to offer. I have been looking at the science of ageing!

Yes, I have not only found super-foods and an elusive dipeptide that appears to slow down ageing! You want me to share these secrets don’t you? This dipeptide is already used in anti-wrinkle creams and a lot of research has been done. (more…)
