Writing your own story #ramble

Yes, it’s Sunday morning and I’m allowing you into the dark recesses of my mind and sharing my thoughts once again. It is a wet weekend so where will I go today? I’m not staying in! I think I might go to Poundland and see if I can scan my own shopping through the till without some kid coming to my aid. It happens to be near my favourite sweet shop so I might as well pop in there as well. I talked to a couple of students this week via Skype. One of them is a writer and so very creative but at a cross-road in her life. I told her to create her own story. Life is a journey, but a journey is a story. In fact, when I am writing a story besides putting many characters in the story I put many places in the story too. Life is like that, isn’t it? Many places and many people.

Rising prices could spoil Christmas #thrifty

We have seen a lot of rising prices recently mainly on food items because of the devaluation of the pound. Now OPEC has agreed to limit oil production and we could see rising prices associated with that. This price rise will be delayed, higher oil prices mean higher production costs in the future. The higher heating oil, diesel prices and petrol prices will come sooner, maybe before the end of the winter.

Pre-loved and used.

There is a lot less stigma to buying used goods these days and most people buy used cars. You can obviously get a bargain if you know what to look for and where. Even clothes and furniture can be found at great prices. (more…)

Planning ahead #thrifty

I still haven’t bought any Christmas presents, but I’m looking out for suitable gifts. Many prices will go up closer to Christmas, so you can save money by getting your presents early. One idea is to buy a few smaller gifts and put them in a gift bag. You can get the gift bags from Poundland. (more…)

Is it really a bargain? #thrifty

Things might look like bargains in discounters like Aldi, Lidl and Poundland, but they aren’t always a bargain. We should always compare to other stores. (more…)

Life: Colourful or grey?

Narrowboat at Waterside Place, Walsall

I photographed some narrow-boats yesterday, they were very colourful. I talked to the owners and they were quite colourful too. They have chosen a slower, alternate way of life, travelling the canals and trading where they can to make a living. (more…)

Buying the image

Like it or not, we all have an image and most people care about their image. It makes us dress smarter for a night out or to the office and influences many of the purchases that we make. The marketing departments of successful companies know this. Do we need to spend a lot of money pandering to our own vanity? Do we need a posh home? Do we need the decorations and Christmas tree at Christmas? Do we need posh clothing? Do we need all the adornments?

This weeks super-six at Aldi are Kiwis (6), peaches (4/5), Galia melon, Romaine lettuce (2), tomatoes (6) and new potatoes (750g). They are all 69p each. The peaches from Aldi are delicious. I had 400g of grapes last week, that’s smaller pack but cheaper! Lots of packs are getting smaller these days…

Black Country Art review

a bridge

I’ve come to the end of my art week and so I thought I would start today with an artistic edit. You never know, pictures like this might be displayed in the art gallery one day. We could launch a whole new school of art from here in the Black Country. We could call it, “Flyin’ Pigs”. We could do worse…

Starting your own art collection

Spring flowers 2013 063

Continuing the art week theme. Why not start your own art collection? On a budget of course! All you need to begin, is an A4 picture frame from Poundland and a picture to put in it. Art is about acceptance and so any picture that you like and accept is suitable. Then you can hang it on the wall anywhere you like.

Preparing for a frugal Christmas

Money - Seeing the future

I have been reading about getting presents for Christmas and many of the suggestions involve parting with serious amounts of money. Many people need to cut back this year. People are supposed to be short of money in a recession, but it seems not everyone needs to cut back. I shall show you before Christmas how to send Christmas Greetings for free, by using a suitable photo with Merry Christmas on it and posting it on Facebook. That’ll save a few bleeding postage stamps.
