HS 2 another fracking bad idea

HS 2 was a plan for a high speed rail link from London to the Midlands, but now it’s been extended to the north of England too. The original estimate of the cost was supposed to be 32 billions, but that has been revised upwards to 42 billions and with the governments track record we can expect it to cost closer to 100 billions. Could we spend money and invest more wisely?

Norfolk Broads Friday 19 April 2013 Windmill

This is a photo that Simon James took on the Norfolk Broads (England) some time ago. I’ve edited it and the main thing was to add contrast. Simon often zooms in too close to the subject, but he has it about right with this photo.

Black Country Art review

a bridge

I’ve come to the end of my art week and so I thought I would start today with an artistic edit. You never know, pictures like this might be displayed in the art gallery one day. We could launch a whole new school of art from here in the Black Country. We could call it, “Flyin’ Pigs”. We could do worse…

Art in the Black Country

The Milky in June

If you are following my blog posts this week, you’ll know I’m having an art week. The region of England where I live, isn’t well known for art. It could be, but someone has to lead a new art movement. I don’t really think the local galleries will provide leadership, they don’t rate the local artists very highly. The great artists come from London, Paris, Vienna, Rome and New York, not Walsall.

Sunday in the Black Country

Lock and Sandwell Valley 022

The photo today is of the River Tame in Sandwell Valley Country Park. I’m not sure where I’ll go today. I want to go somewhere, because the weather forecast is good. At Walsall it’s the Caldmore Village Festival in Palfrey Park. I was going to photograph that last year, but the weather wasn’t very good.

Lock old photo

I managed to take a few photos on Sunday and so I went back to see this lock-keepers cottage in Walsall. There are some leaves on the trees now and although the sun was going lower, I got a different photograph.

Spring flowers in May

Flowers in May

The river in the picture is the River Tame. This photo was taken last May, but I drove past there yesterday and the flowers are just starting to bloom again. They seem to grow all along the Tame, I’ve seen them at Walsall and Dudley.

Thrifty Thursday | Walsall again?

The Aldi super-six this week are celery, cucumbers, lemons (3), spring onions, tomatoes (6) and garlic (4). They are all 49p each. That’s the same as last week. I spend ten pounds this week in Poundland, which isn’t difficult.

A trip to Walsall

GALLERY 031

I went to the wonderful town of Walsall yesterday.  I used to think Walsall was great. The market used to go up the hill nearly to the church and that street was lined with little interesting shops. Walsall is a shadow of it’s former self.

Weekend review from the heart of England

SANDWELL VALLEY 048

I get a few local readers at the weekend and so I’ll explain about today’s picture. I took this at Easter at Forge Mill Farm in Sandwell Valley Country Park. From Walsall take the Birmingham Road, turn right at the Scott Arms and go up the Newton Road then left into Forge Lane. Forge Mill Farm is on the left, take the second entrance.

This is the pool in Moorcroft Wood, last summer. The next picture is of it recently in the depths of winter; after the snow.

Neodigital Art | Timeline pictures

a zillion ideas sunset

This picture is my my cover picture on my Facebook Timeline. On the left of the picture is my profile photo, just underneath where the sun is in this picture. When you’re doing a photo like this, it’s important to get the text in the right place.

Neodigital Art | Artistic editing

narrowboat

I can’t remember when I took this photo. I think it was the summer of 2011. I do remember having to take it through chain-link fencing. I have edited it again using PhotoScape using a watercolour option. It looks quite artistic now.

VICTORIA PARK 019

This is an old railway track that has been turned into a little park. It was dark and cloudy and so I used a slow setting on my camera.

Neodigital Art | Merrion’s Wood

MERRIONS 2012 089

Regular readers will know that the photograph that I had in the finals of a contest last year was taken in Merrion’s Wood. The light can be very difficult in woodland because it can be dark. You can see in this picture that the sunlight was bright, but he trees cast shadows. (more…)

Looking for depth

I set the camera on landscape for this shot which gives a narrow aperture and some depth of field. The shot in is focus and there are a lot of interesting colours. I couldn’t get anything in the foreground though to give the shot depth. I have edited and made the photograph darker to get the colours right.
