Value hunting #thrifty

value hunting on a Thursday

I like a bargain, but mostly I look for good value. Value hunting is a skill that means learning about materials and the way things are made. I check for the quality of fabric and look at how good stitching is. I also check the quality of steel and plastics. Plastics can be quite brittle on some cheap consumer good as break easily. Plastics used for quality cameras will usually take quite a knock. Value hunting means looking for quality at an affordable price.

Value hunting fashion

You can find fashionable items in discount stores amongst the lines that have gone out of fashion and save pounds compared to the trendy stores. The clothes or shoes might not be the same brand but they can be the same quality. I’ve recently bought clothes from a discount store where they were better quality than the trendy fashion store in the retail centre.

Buying professional

Often it is better to go to a supplier that supplies the trade for DIY goods rather than a retailer. I bought a motor mower this week and it will be great once I get my lawn down to a reasonable height. It was fairly easy to attach the handles and the engine was set perfectly. The engine started the first time. It was more expensive than a normal electric mower but so much easier to mow a large lawn. In fact, I think my lawn is about to get larger and cover the whole damn garden. Professional tools are always much better than the ‘amateur tools’. They do some good ones in Aldi that are meant for professionals as well.

Value hunting art

Many people now want art adorning the walls of their homes rather than tacky decor from Ikea. Value hunting can be applied again. It doesn’t have to be an original painting, it can be a quality print and many people go for a vintage map or an art nouveau print that can be relatively inexpensive. Watch out for pictures on bric-a-brac stalls and car boot sales. You might even decide to produce your own artistic masterpiece and have it printed on canvas. Check out Amazon for canvas prints from photographs.

Value hunting days out

A summer day out can be good value if you think about travel cost, the costs of eating out, the entrance fees to attractions and try to get good value by increasing enjoyment while decreasing the cost. Choosing a nature reserve with a picnic area and taking your own picnic could be a really good value day out for all the family. I’ll be at the local park on Sunday where there will be a garden party for the Queen’s 90th birthday celebration. Taking a picnic will be a value option but there will be free drinks and some free food. Entrance is free and the entertainment is free too.

I hope I’ve given you some ideas for hunting for value this week that will save you a few quid. If you would like to follow this blog, just enter your email address at the top of the sidebar or follow me on Twitter  for updates. There are more ideas on my Facebook page.
