Wednesbury Celebrates Christmas lunch

TOWN HALL CHRISTMAS PARTY 2015 (76)

I photographed a Christmas lunch yesterday that was laid on by our local community organisation ‘Wednesbury Celebrates’ for older people. A press photographer took some pictures too, but my purpose was quite different. I wanted pictures that promoted the charity and the event.

I wanted to show the people and the entertainers and show how successful and enjoyable the event was. It certainly had a Christmas atmosphere to it and was enjoyed by everyone. My problem, as always, was the light and so I was using my new Speedlight, after having a little practice.

I was using an 18 to 105 lens which gave me quite a good zoom and the Speedlight was set on TTL, which is through the lens metering. The flash is very powerful and on full power is far too bright. TTL gives a flash that is shorter and low power taking advantage of the light that is already there.

The flash is so powerful, it gets hot after a while and so do the batteries and needs a rest. I had a flood of light coming into the room when the sun came out. I changed the white balance from flash to fluorescent, but that gave part of the picture a blue tinge where there was natural light. On the shots that are close up, it is more noticeable.

I took this shot from the balcony which gives an entirely different view. I actually did a lens change to a 300 mm lens to take some shots of the stage. I’ll be returning to the town hall next week to take a few photos of the Peter Pan pantomime. I hope with all the colourful costumes to get some interesting pictures. I might use the flash before the performance if some of the characters want photos taken, but during the performance I’ll rely on the stage lighting and maybe increase the ISO to make the camera sensor more sensitive to the light. I’ll have to think about which white balance to use for the stage lights.
