Wish you were here? #ramble

It’s Sunday morning and so once again I’ll share my thoughts with you. This week I considered producing a postcard for Wednesbury. This picture was the top choice when I asked people which one they preferred.

LEATHERN BOTTEL 2016

Ye Olde Leathern Bottel

Ye Olde Leathern Bottel was established in 1510 but I think it has been rebuilt since then and now has a board up advertising it as a business opportunity. I think the company that owns it sees it as a high-end restaurant but local people don’t really see anything in Wednesbury as up-market. It looks nice but it is just a community pub with a bit of history attached. It is reportedly haunted if you believe in that sort of nonsense. Dick Turpin is also believed to have frequented the place and we know that it was once a hive of industry in the workshop at the back where gun locks were made.

St Marys and blue ball

Two listed buildings

This is a much better picture and the light was just about as good as it gets. There are two listed buildings, the Old Blue Ball and St Mary’s church. People dislike the vehicles in the picture but they are more or less a permanent fixture. I dislike the white gazebo in the yard of the church too. I think it would make a good postcard or art card. I am favouring an art card with no printing on the back and a good quality card printed in silk rather than gloss.

Life

Life for me doesn’t usually go to plan and I have had some major problems this week. I saw my doctor and that didn’t go well. To cut a long story very short, I will also have to be more careful with money so maybe my postcard project will have to be postponed for some time. I did have a picture printed for the art exhibition which I’ll try to get included in next year’s art festival. I can at least try to get my money’s worth out of that.

Wish you were here?

No, Wednesbury isn’t the nicest place to be in the world and I think the culture is going down-hill. I detect a politically correct, take no chances and make it look good attitude, in both local government and in the health service. I wasn’t happy with the way my doctor’s appointment went but I did get a text asking me how likely I am to recommend the surgery to others. So that’s alright, right? Actually, I was already annoyed and found that message added to my anxiety and made me feel all hope was lost. Spending on technology to make things look good and interactive is crap when I can’t get an appointment to see a consultant.

I do try to be positive but when I talk to people, which isn’t that often, I find they are finding life depressing too. Out of a dozen people I have talked to recently not one said anything cheerful. In fact, one had just tried to commit suicide. I do try to promote the town using social media but I frequently ask, is it worth it?

I suppose I have to pull myself together, that used to be the old-fashioned advice closely followed by ‘get a grip’! I have slept with my bed resting on a small stool raising my feet and hopefully improving oedema in my left ankle for the past two nights. I’ll try to get some exercise today to improve the problems I’m having with the other leg! Of course, when we are struggling, we clutch at straws which is why I put my lottery numbers on for another 8 weeks this morning. I doubt if money would improve my health problems but it would solve a few other problems. What would I do with a huge lottery win? Despite being really annoyed with people in general, I would still use it to improve the community I live in.

That’s all for this week, I’ll be writing about photography, as usual, on Tuesday. At least I can be dispassionate about that subject!
